Taste of Sierra Leone is a pro-bono Brandkind project, through their client FoodLab Sydney. Brandkind is a branding community I belong to, purpose-built for the social enterprise community. FoodLab Sydney is a not-for-profit kitchen incubator that supports food entrepreneurs from high-barrier backgrounds to grow and formalise their food businesses.
It was started by two sisters; Kadiatu and Fatmata with cooking support from their beautiful mother, creating delicious Sierra Leone cuisine. The brief was to create a brand identity that felt like a bright colourful ‘African festival’ as they put it. It needed to feel warm and vibrant and create community.

THE CONCEPT
When looking into Sierra Leone’s vibrant culture, I came across lots of bright colours and textiles. The brand identity draws inspiration from the vibrant patterned textile in the traditional African dress worn by Fatama and Kadiatu's mother. (See below) The loosely drawn custom lettering drawn forms the foundation, which is then enhanced with colourful African-inspired patterns and bright, cultural hues. This teamed with a bold yet simple handwritten typeface creates a warm, welcoming, festival inspired vibe.

Custom drawn illustrations were created using the loose lines and patterns of the brandmark. The items drawn were chosen to reflect the girls’ story; Their culture, their beautiful food, cooking utensils, as well as themselves. These illustrations create a set of branded assets that help bring the brand to life, and express its’ warm, vibrant personality.

Kadiatu and Fatmata offer catering through Foodlab and also frequent many of Sydney’s iconic food markets and cultural food festivals. The branding has set them apart from their competitors, and made them easy to recognise at each event.
